MNIK tops one-day sales record for Hindi films History

Grossing $761,000 Sunday, the highest one-day gross ever for any Hindi-language film in North America, Shah Rukh Khan starrer "My Name Is Khan" is on a record-breaking spree at the box office.

Karan Johar directed film was initially expected to drop by 7 percent over Saturday to $682,000. But it performed better than expected on Sunday grossing $761,000 for a four percent increase.

The Fox Searchlight release's revised opening weekend figure for February 12-14 now stands at $1,939,000, still a new all-time record for a Hindi film beating the $1,764,131 of 2007's "Om Shanti Om."

Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, MNIK averaged a stellar $16,158 from 120 theaters across the United States and Canada over three days. Theatres across the country have reported sold-out shows and have had to turn moviegoers away.

"My Name Is Khan" is estimated to gross $336,000 on Monday, Presidents' Day, bringing the estimated four-day opening weekend figure to $2,275,000.

This makes the Karan Johar film the fastest Hindi film ever to break the $2,000,000 mark beating the previous record of 5 days set in December by "3 Idiots" which grossed $2,149,227 in its five-day opening over the Christmas holiday weekend.

In India, Bollywood trade sources say that despite having a limited release in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, due to political opposition, the film managed a huge worldwide box office collection on the opening day. The trade also feels that the film may have easily earned an additional Rs 5 crores over this figure had the release been trouble-free.

“We are delighted with the performance and the audience reactions across demographics,’’ says Vijay Singh of Fox Star Studios. “More so, because this is just one phase of the release. Besides the 45 countries where MNIK is already playing, it will be rolled out in a phased manner across 25 non-traditional markets from April onwards.’’

Naturally, Karan is elated. Says Bollywood’s dynamic and celebrated filmmaker, “I am overwhelmed with all the feedback. I’ve never received so much love on any film before. It is heartening to connect with the audiences worldwide. My name is Karan and I’m truly humbled.’’
