Bollywood’s been swamped by a Twitter tsunami. And with regular updates in 140 characters, the stars have never been closer.

Shah Rukh Khan’s undoubtedly the king on Twitter and has wit, charm and turn of phrase to prove it. From being self-deprecatory to acerbic, warm and extremely sensitive, reading @imsrk is like watching a Hindi movie. His comments are original, his metaphors unique and his charm irresistible. He tweets about his kids, his wife, his parents and his films. And even though Shah Rukh manages to keep his fans close, he remains private when it matters.
B Company
Their iconic surname is enough to pull in fans by the thousands. Whether it’s @srbachchan with his child-like glee for the new medium, or @juniorbachchan with his love for music and Macs, or @aishwaryarb who has suddenly gone off Twitter (the buzz is she’ll be back soon), or @lady_jaya who, despite having tweeted a total of four times is still endearing, this is definitely the most-followed family on Twitter. Papa B routinely stirs up the nostalgia reminiscing about a certain shooting schedule, his father’s verses or where he proposed to his wife. Abhishek, on the other hand, keeps his tweets current and crunchy. Junior B is as generous with his greetings as he is with telling people off when they get nasty. Interestingly, both baap and beta seem to be on a roll in the Bio section. While Amitabh describes himself as an actor, following that up with “...well at least some are STILL saying so!!” Abhishek says he’s an actor, adding “...well at least some say so!”
Did you expect the brat to change spots online? Of course not. Salman Khan is a man for the masses — cool, nonchalant and a star in the true sense of the word. Spelling and propriety be damned, @beingsalmankhan is a rule unto himself and he lets everyone know that. Sallu tweets like he talks — with loads of slang, bizarre pictures and in Bambaiya Hindi. He’s also easily irritated and keeps threatening to stop tweeting. Sometimes, he also tells his young fans not to waist (his spelling not ours) their time on Twitter and go study or work instead.
Hunky like Atlas, @ihrithik also seems to carry a world of troubles on his chiselled shoulders. His initial warmth and love notes to wife Sussanne have, off late, been overshadowed by grouses against the media. It’s either good Kites bytes or bad Kites bytes, depending on whether he’s addressing fans or journalists. Trying to maintain a saintly calm now that his movie has been panned by one and all, Hrithik Roshan recently tweeted: I send peace and love for those who hated my film with a vengeance. I send you understanding.
Khiladi Kumar is prone to boring updates on Twitter, from shooting schedules to the weather or cricket matches. Interestingly, while @akshaykumar may have many followers, the man himself only follows updates on the page of his forthcoming film. We think someone needs to give Akki a lesson in Twitt-iquette. Babes on the block...
Young, gorgeous and politically correct, @deepikapadukone is usually on a path to self-discovery on Twitter. Almost every third tweet of Deepika Padukone is about the beauty of either nature or some great track that she’s grooving to. She tries occasional quotations too: “No matter how good you can get, one can always get better.” And of course during IPL season she was the Bangalore team’s prettiest cheerleader.
Priyanka Chopra is probably the actress with the most ads in her kitty right now. And she promotes all the brands she endorses on Twitter. More often than not, @priyankachopra replies to fans individually.
She may hate the tag but @realpreityzinta is among the bubbliest babes on Twitter. When she’s not filling her 140-character space with Muaaaahs, Grrrrrs and Heh-hehs, Preity Zinta is found spreading awareness and sunshine among all her followers.
Not surprisingly, Bollywood’s best bod regularly plays fitness guru on Twitter. When @theshilpashetty is not tweeting greetings to colleagues, Shilpa Shetty is giving her fans and followers health tips. The lady also used Twitter to air her stand on the IPL controversy.

Rahman is the master and it’s proved by the fact that he has over one lakh followers and follows zero. ARR usually tweets about all national and international music collaborations. Back home, the music world seems like a mutual admiration society. There’s Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan praising each other’s songs, Vishal Dadlani praising them both, Sonu Nigam telling Abhijit Sawant they haven’t caught up in a while and Salim-Sulaiman telling the world about their new score for the football world cup. Zzzzz.... this is one boring musical.

A star who feeds off the media and vice versa, Mallika Sherawat has managed to win friends and influence people on platforms that asli B-town babes have not even touched. Her diva-ness begins right from her Twitter handle — and @mallikaLA is quick to clarify all rumours about herself with great style. To reports that Paris Hilton ignored her at some event, the lady tweeted: “Get it right, media! Paris Hilton gossip not true. Wasnt anywhere near her. Was hangin with the boys (Gerard B, Ryan G, Ryan K) all nite”. She puts up pictures of herself very frequently and, in response to a gushing fan, said “Bollywood does not know what to do with me”. Though nowhere close to Mallika in the diva stakes, wannabe Sherlyn Chopra is trying hard to get into her league. She recently uploaded an artistically shot nude of herself but pulled it down hurriedly. No guts no glory, baby!

Many filmmakers are on Twitter but some need special mention — Mahesh Bhatt, @Maheshnbhatt, Bollywood’s best commentator, plays the same role online. Karan Johar, @kjohar25, who was instrumental in getting all of B-town to tweet, still has the most high-profile list of followers ever. Journalists believe the best way to track a celeb down is to find him/her on KJo’s page. Shekhar Kapur, @Shekharkapur, is usually into self-promotion. These days, he’s focused on tweeting that he’s not directing Mr India 2, and concentrating on his new film Paani.
Coffee, tea, or...
He’s either talking about gadgets or his dialysis or inviting PYTs over for coffee. From Deepika Padukone to Genelia D’Souza, Lara Dutta, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra, the original ‘Yahoo’ man still manages to keep up with all the leading ladies in town. Recently, when Deepika turned down his offer of coffee citing work commitments and late shooting, @shamsheraj was sporting enough to tell the leggy babe that “work is important, coffee toh kabhi bhi pi sakte hain”. Which doesn’t mean he’s given up on asking her over for a cuppa, though. Of course the man is still as charming as he was in his heyday. When Lara Dutta recently tweeted “An evening in Paris” the charismatic actor promptly reverted with “That is one good reason why you should have taken me with you. Love”.
